BY ARYANA SINGH & ELEANOR HARLEY
Enola Holmes follows the adventures of its exuberant protagonist. It is a movie text which is based on the upbringing of a young girl called Enola who is constantly trying to decipher who she is and what her purpose in life is. After the passing of her father and the departure of her brothers, Enola is raised by her mother Eudora, living in their solitary home, Ferndell hall. Her mother is very persistent with her, in learning how to look after herself in the real world, constantly making her focus on science, philosophy, jujitsu, literature and a wide range of strategy games and anagrams. This film is meant for younger viewers but remains with a noted targeted audience of 13 years old along with parental guidance. Enola loves her life, but on her sixteenth birthday her beloved mother Eudora vanishes, causing her distant brothers to return – Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Sherlock undertakes the search for his mother. While searching for her missing mother, intrepid teen Enola Holmes uses her sleuthing skills to outsmart big brother Sherlock and help a runaway lord.
Reader, note that there are multiple books – one being the original and others being based on the movie, so it depends on which one you read, but this is our opinion; on the original book as well as the movie.
The question is which is better, the movie or the book?

In comparing the book to the movie, the protagonist’s mother Eudora is very different from the one in the book’s description. She still cares for Enola in the book, but she seems to care a little more in the movie. As well as this, the butler and his wife, who work at Ferndell hall, are not as important as in the books. The butler is not highly featured in the movie. Also, and we are highly disappointed about this, there is no Reginald Collie! Now, onto the escape. Firstly, Enola dresses as a boy to escape, which, in the book, she avoids doing because she knows her brothers would be looking for her, dressed as a boy. Overall, our opinion is that both deserve validation, but we think that the best one is the movie in terms of truly supporting Enola’s journey to find herself as well as her mother. Even though the book has many features that the movie misses.
The movie is based in London; the character is portrayed by the actress Millie Bobby-Brown, who undertakes the character’s journey, making Enola’s traits quite clear, along with her weaknesses. Enola comes off as a very intelligent individual, appearing to have an eccentric personality, defying society’s beliefs with her headstrong attitude. She is very observant and insightful, watching the way in which everything works and seems. She often goes deeper into the theory that she was meant to be alone but soon realises that while she does well on her own, she wasn’t meant to be alone.

To conclude this review, Enola Holmes is a movie and book about an insightful young girl who goes on a journey to discover and find out more about herself, as well as the ways of the world. The controversy Enola faces about being female only gives her more power to be her own person, and thrives her curiosity.
