First Kill is a Netflix show, telling the intense love story of Legacy vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook), and monster hunter Calliope (Imani Lewis). The show is themed off a short story by V.E. Schwab.
Sarah Catherine Hook is known for her earlier role in The Conjuring III, and Imani Lewis has featured in Premature. Hook was cast before Lewis, as the main character Juliette.
This show somehow manages to find a shared interest in all viewers, making it relatable and fun to watch.
Filmed predominantly in Savannah, Georgia, First Kill centers itself around the idea of a “First Kill”. For Cal, first kill means killing her first monster. For Juliette, it means biting (and killing) her first human.
Another large aspect of this show is Calliope and Juliette realizing that neither of them identify with their respective family culture: Cal doesn’t know if killing monsters is ethical, and Juliette feels guilty about biting humans.
First Kill explores the highly relatable feeling of wanting desperately to impress your parents. Juliette wants to fit in more with her remorseless family, and Cal desires to be more like her strong, merciless, unrelenting parents.
Part of what makes First Kill so successful is that it combines supernatural and coming-of-age themes, as well as a beautiful Romeo and Juliet-esque love story.
It combines old fashioned true love in a modern-day, teenage setting.
