Fiction for the Future — An exciting new creative writing competition for the Senior School

AUTHOR: IRIS LEACH DOWE

The future is approaching for Generation Z, and its arrival brings creative inspiration and new challenges. A new creative writing competition, titled “Fiction for the Future” was launched at the end of last term to challenge students to look at what awaits them in their future.

The competition, with this year’s theme of “Generation Z”, asks you to write a short story of around 1500 words or a piece of poetry of approximately 30 lines, and submit it by the end of Week 3 in Term 2. The stimulus to get students inspired is ‘Her Time’ by Lang Leav.

This competition is an opportunity for students to reflect on what Generation Z means to them. In the media, Generation Z is often referred to in relation to our use of technology, or our mission to save the planet, or even us as the ‘generation of the future’; is this accurate? What else do we hold as a generation? What is your personal experience with growing up in the 21st century? This is also an opportunity to use ideas of youth and growing up to write an interesting creative story.

My name is Iris, and I started this project because I noticed that in the CGGS community there aren’t that many ways to express ourselves in relation to growing up and learning about who we are. This school is where we take on our most formative years and become young adults. Let’s talk about it!

Entries will be accepted until Week 3. If there are enough entries, they will be published as an exciting online anthology! Email your submissions to 48674@cggs.act.edu.au.
